ISMN : International Standard Music Number

The International Standard Music Number (ISMN) is a unique number for the identification of all printed music publications from all over the world, whether available for sale, hire or gratis--whether a part, a score, or an element in a multi-media kit. The ISMN consists of 13 digits starting with 979-0.

ISMN Agency

The International ISMN Agency promotes, coordinates and supervises the world-wide use of the ISMN system. It acts as the Registration Authority for this ISO Standard (ISO 10957). The administration of the ISMN is not centralized, but is operated by agencies in each participating country or region. The local agencies assign the publisher IDs to the publishing houses. Author publishers are also entitled to an ISMN.

Since 1 January 2008, if you already have an existing 10-digit ISMN, this is now prefixed by 979- and the leading M- of the 10-digit ISMN will be replaced by 0- (zero). ISO Standard 10957 gives the basic rules of the ISMN system.
