Book barcodes are different from both magazine and product barcodes. They encode a unique 13-digit number called an I.S.B.N. or International Standard Book Number.
Book publishers worldwide are assigned ISBNs by the ISBN Agency. Each ISBN contains a country code, a unique identity code (the'publishers prefix'), and finally a book title number.
Worldwide there are approx 160 ISBN National Agencies and centres where a publisher may apply for ISBN's. To find your nearest ISBN Agency, visit http://isbn-international.org
ISBNs are asigned usually in blocks of 10 numbers or more. The cost (and processing time) will differ from one ISBN centre to another.

In the USA an ISBN book barcode is known as a Bookland barcode. Bookland barcodes for the US market carry an additional 5-digit add-on code. This carries the currency code (for US$ the number is "5") followed by the Recommended Retail Price, e.g., "52150" indicates US$21.50.
Books destined for retail at non-bookstore outlets in the US, such as drugstores or supermarkets, may sometimes be required (by the wholesaler or distributor) to carry an additional UPC barcode on the back cover, and the Bookland barcode moved to the inside front cover. It is wise to consult with your distributor, prior to printing.
