WHAT IS AN ISSN?

The ISSN is an 8-digit (7 + 1 check digit) international identity number for journals, newspapers, and all serial titles (including serial CDs and serial electronic formats). All titles issued serially (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually, periodically, occasionally, etc.) may register and receive their unique ISSN or International Standard Serial Number, free of charge . We will then encode this unique number into serial barcode(s) for you.

In addition, information on issue dates, issue numbers, and price change information is encoded into your ISSN barcode. In this way, each issue carries a unique barcode, and price-changes are reflected in the updated barcodes.

WHAT INFORMATION IS REQUIRED?

Your nearest ISSN centre will send you an application form requesting information on:

• Title
• Frequency
• Subject
• Language(s)
• Date of issue
• Format
• Size
• Related titles
• Editions
• Publisher's contact details

The ISSN centre is likely to request a copy or, in the case of advance applications, a preview copy, or a mock-up of the cover and the title page / editorial page / contents page.

PLEASE NOTE : BARCODES & ISSNS :

* A change in your publication's title requires a new ISSN number, and new barcodes.

* A new Edition of your title - for instance a regional edition or a new language edition - requires a new ISSN number and a distinct set of barcodes.

* A change in cover price does not requre a new ISSN number, but it does require price-updated barcodes. Likewise, special editions and annuals require special barcodes.

Once you have secured your ISSN, you can proceed to order your barcodes.

The ISSN Agency requests that publishers print the title's ISSN number in a prominent place on the publication cover. To comply with `this requirement, IMS Barcodes (unless requested otherwise) print the ISSN number above each barcode.
